Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea Tourism Forum |
The Festival of Bathing Beauties is a totally unique festival that uses the coastal landscape as a backdrop for what is the largest art festival in europe.
Run by volunteers from the local tourism forum a spectacular programme of music, art, poetry, dance, sculpture, film and performance art is put together for a amazing art and cultural experience with many interactive activities and a chance for all to sample and enjoy many different art forms. It is a celebration of art and culture in a coastal setting.
This years festival had a real international element with its links to the SEAS project and showcased the first performance in the uk of the Bulgarian Plovdiv Drama Theatre Company performance of 'Suitcases'.
A France2 TV crew spent two days filming the festival trying to get to grips with the English peoples love of the seaside and beachhuts.
This year also saw the erection of a new ' Bathing Beauty' ' A Hut for Gazing and Canoodling ' designed by the london architects 'We Made That'.
The hut is going to be in the care of the Tourism Forum and will be available for hire all year round. For more details of how to hire the hut call Helen Matthews on 07894292641.
The Forum is also working on a funding bid to develop the festival over the next three years with an international art strand to widen its appeal to international artists and visitors and extend the festival into a weeklong event. We are also looking to the private sector for investment particularly in the production of a larger brochure and hospitality with the press.
Dr Kathryn Ferry launched her new book 'Sheds on the Seashore' at this years festival. Kathryn was based in the new bathing Beauty ' A Hut for Gazing and Canoodling' giving the countries leading beach hut expert a change to be one of the first people to sample the latest of the beach that was designed for the 21st century.
Brighton author Kathy Watts was also with us at the festival with her children's book ' Sandies in the Hut' the sequal to 'Sandies on the Beach' is due out for this christmas.
Local band ' Loving Disposition' will be headlined the festival over all three days, showcasing our brilliant local talent
Next years festival will be held on the 17th, 18th and 19th September and is set to be even bigger than last year with, more contemporary performance art, art trails and art workshops for community groups to produce artwork for the parade on Saturday evening.
