In 2008, for the first time, Mablethorpe entered the national “In Bloom” competition with the support of East Lindsey District Council, the Town Council, Neighbourhood Management Project and many other organisations. Why did we do it? Because we thought it would be an excellent way to bring people together to improve the look of our town - and what a success it has been.
Mablethorpe In Bloom 2008 review
Well – Judgement Day – Friday 11th – 3pm to 5pm - came and went in a rush of last minute arrangements, heavy showers, clambering into Landrovers with the Mablethorpe Mermaid, clock watching etc etc – phew what a day – I certainly won’t forget it in a hurry.
So firstly, some THANK YOU’s
To all our volunteers – a FANTASTIC effort – magic people can do magic things
To all our sponsors and supporters – we couldn’t have done it without you
To all the businesses who made such an effort – what a difference it made
To all the unsung heroes behind the scenes- well done
To our hosts at The Cross Inn, “borrowed Bentley”, RNLI landrover – and of course the lovely buffet at Linda’s Pavilion – you did us proud
To the “meters, greeters and guides” – Miss Rosebud, Doreen Stephenson, Margaret Rolls, Helena Poskitt, Alan Smith, Our lovely mermaid, Tony Howard, Bernard Dobbs, Steve Prattley, Ken Nash, Karen Cartwright – too many others to mention – the judges said it was one of the best welcomes they’d ever had.
So – what did we achieve
Well – whatever we get from the judging – you only have to look round the town to know that we are already big winners – doesn’t it just look so much better ?
The judges commented – and were particularly impressed with
Linkage Green – not just the floral displays, but the sustainable plantings around the housing development - and how Graham and the team involved so many people
The Wild areas left amongst the mown “rough meadow” on Stanley Avenue
Floral displays on the High Street and Seacroft Road
All the work on the Pullover and the Prom by the ELDC team
Creative approach to Grafitti on the Prom – and the absence of litter everywhere
Sustainable – and appropriate – planting on the Prom and Seaview car park
The improvements to Queens Park and the commemorative rose garden
The high standards of the competition entries – best garden to go into the “nationals”
However - the thing that impressed them most – was that so many different people and different organisations had become involved – Helena and Tony’s sponsorship which started it off - Town and District councils - North Sea Camp – Oham Lakes – Woodthorpe Garden Centre – David Ives sponsoring the competitions – Catherine at the Primary School – Dinah at Surestart - Ken, John and Gareth with the wooden welcome signs – the list goes on – you know who you are – and what a difference you’ve made.
Once again the people of Mablethorpe accepted the challenge – and performed miracles
What now
Judges report comes back sometime in the next 4 to six weeks
